Function Generator tips
Use these tips to get the most out of the Function Generator sidebar in Google Sheets and Excel.
Build functions faster
Highlight the target cell in your sheet before opening the Function Generator. When you click Generate, the formula inserts into that cell automatically.
Use the
Insertinput box to override the target cell if you want to place the formula somewhere else.Enter a ticker directly (e.g.
"AAPL"), a cell reference (e.g.A1), or a range for batch functions (e.g.A1:A21).
Learn by building
The Function Generator displays the live formula string as you select options. Watch the formula update to learn SheetsFinance syntax without memorising parameters.
Pick the right base function
The Base Function dropdown lists every available function category. Select the category first, then choose the exact metric or statement you need. This filters the options so only relevant parameters are shown.
